The A/C clutch is what cycles the compressor on and off while you're using your A/C. The clutch has sealed bearings and no lubrication points, so failure often means a seized clutch. The drive belt will continue to try to turn the A/C compressor clutch, so you may hear loud squealing from the belt or a grinding noise from the worn-out bearings. The A/C itself can't perform without the compressor clutch, so you will certainly notice higher-than-normal temperatures while running the A/C. The compressor is the heart of the A/C system, and it can't run without the clutch.
