Buying Headlights

When shopping for replacement headlights for your vehicle, there are several key factors to consider to ensure optimal performance and safety. First, it's essential to identify the correct size and type of headlights compatible with your vehicle's make and model; this information can typically be found in your owner’s manual or through our online vehicle selector tool. Additionally, consider the type of bulb – options like halogen, LED, and HID each have distinct benefits in terms of brightness, longevity, and energy consumption. Check for features such as beam pattern and color temperature, as they can significantly affect visibility and driving comfort. It's also wise to evaluate the durability and warranty of the products, as investing in high-quality headlights can save you money in the long run due to reduced need for replacements. Finally, assess any installation requirements, such as whether the headlights can be easily installed by yourself or if professional assistance is recommended for optimal alignment and functionality.

What are the different types of headlights for cars?

There are several different types of headlights that you could use to headlight or bulb replacement. First, Sealed Beam Headlights are unique as they come in integrated units which combines the lens, reflector, and filament into a single enclosed piece, plus they are traditionally utilized in older vehicle models. LED headlights are also popular for their energy efficiency and longevity, offering bright, high-quality light that closely mimics daylight, which enhances visibility and reduces driver fatigue. HID (High-Intensity Discharge) headlights are known for their superior brightness and long-range illumination, making them ideal for high-speed or highway driving, although they may take a few seconds to reach full brightness after being turned on. Finally, halogen headlights are the most traditional and widely used type, known for their affordability and relatively easy maintenance, providing adequate brightness for everyday driving while being cost-effective to replace.

What type of headlight is best for night driving?

LED headlights are often favored for night driving due to their bright, white light output that closely mimics daylight, reducing eye strain and improving on-road clarity. Additionally, LEDs offer a broader, more even light distribution, helping drivers to see further down the road and to the sides, which can be beneficial on poorly lit roads or in rough weather conditions.

If your car comes with them, another excellent choice is HID (High-Intensity Discharge) headlights, known for their intense brightness and superior reach, which can illuminate obstacles and road signs much earlier than conventional halogen bulbs. Keep in mind that HIDs aren't retrofit for halogens, if your vehicle came with HIDs, you would need to replace them with HIDs.

How do you clean/restore headlights on a car?

If you want to clean your own headlights, start by washing them with soap and water. Next, apply a headlight restoration kit, which usually contains cleaning solutions or abrasives that remove the oxidation and scratches from your headlights. Additionally, you can use sanding pads. Afterward, polish the surface with the included polish to restore clarity. For a lasting shine, many kits also include a sealant or protectant to help prevent oxidation from returning. Regular maintenance and timely restoration can extend the life of headlights and enhance their brightness, ensuring safer night driving conditions.

How much do new headlights bulbs or assemblies' cost for a car, truck or SUV?

For headlight bulbs, it depends on the type of bulb, such as LED, HID, or halogen, with halogen bulbs usually being the least expensive and HID or LED bulbs costing more due to their technology and longer lifespan. A standard halogen bulb may range from $10 to $20 each, while an HID bulb could be between $50 to $100, and LED bulbs might start at around $50 and go higher depending on the brand and specifications.

For headlight assemblies, LED headlights tend to be on the pricier side, often ranging from $200 to $800 per pair, including installation costs. On the other hand, HID headlights, which offer superior brightness and long-range illumination, typically fall between $100 to $500 per pair, again depending on the complexity of the vehicle's headlight system. For those seeking a more economical option, halogen headlights are generally the most cost-friendly, with prices ranging from $30 to $100 per pair, making them an appealing choice for many drivers.

Can I replace headlights by myself?

Yes! Replacing your headlights is a very manageable task. After you purchase the correct headlight bulbs, ensure your car is turned off and the headlights are cool to the touch to prevent burns or electrical shocks. Accessing the headlight compartment varies by vehicle make and model, but it typically involves locating the back of the headlight assembly either under the hood or in the wheel well. After disconnecting the power wires, carefully remove the old bulb and replace it with the new one, being careful not to touch the glass part of the bulb directly with your fingers because the oils can cause it to overheat and burn out prematurely. Once secured, reconnect the power and test the headlights to ensure they function correctly.

It's always best to wear gloves when replacing your headlight bulbs as oils from our hands can get on the glass and lead to premature failure. Keep in mind that your headlight bulbs dim overtime, losing up to 50ft of visibility before they burn out. So, we always recommend replacing them in pairs, plus if one burns out, the other isn't far behind.
