Powerbuilt Tools Loaner Tool: Valve Spring Compressor Kit

I used this to remove/install valve springs on a Subaru EJ25 while I was doing head gaskets. As a DIY mechanic, I don't expect to ever need this tool again, so being able to borrow the tool for free with just a deposit was great. As a loaner tool it had been used before, and there was a guide pin missing; the latch was precarious until I fashioned a replacement. I wished that the tool had a larger difference between open and closed. It had to be adjusted narrow enough to compress the spring but wide enough to fit over the head. It took care not to touch the sealing surfaces, even using the offset jaw. The intake valves were especially a challenge because the spark plug tubes limited the positions the tool could be in. Other comments said the tool was flimsy, but I did not find that to be the case, at least if I gently tapped the retainer while compressing the spring. That way the tool did not have to exert extra force to break the keepers loose from the retainer. All in all it got the job done.

This tool is too big for SOHC engines. I used this on a dodge neon head and it was very difficult to maneuver the tool over the valve keepers. A few times, because the fork end piece doesn't stay on, the spring goes flying along with the keepers. Don't risk it and buy or rent this tool, its not worth it. I bought a 17 dollar tool designed for motorcycles and smaller car engines and it worked way better. Seems like this tool wasn't designed for 4 cylinder motors. Oh I actually bent a valve using it, that's what i was trying to say. Not very good.
