does the recommended gap change when using an HEI distributor on a 1978 ford Ranchero with stock 302-2v?

Yes, Carl! This Motorcraft Spark Plug (ASF42CF4) - Part # SP-450-A is pre-gapped at 0.044"-inch from the factory and it is an exact fit for your 1978 Ford Ranchero with 302CI. However, the fact remains that the gap must be adjusted for the vehicle that the spark plug is intended for. Those with modified engines with higher compression or forced induction will typically require smaller gap settings.
Hello, what is the differance between sp450 an sp450A? the other # for these plugs are ASF42C AN ASF42CA I know each # tells the specs of the plug so what would the A mean? thanks steve

Hi Steve, I'm glad to assist you! The Motorcraft Spark Plug - Part # SP-450 is just the older version of the SP-450-A. Both are copper core, the heat range and the seat type are the same. The usual reason that Ford will add an A to their Motorcraft number is a switch in suppliers, example went from an Autolite to NGK manufacturer, Ford will superseded the part number, usually adding an A on the end of the part number.
