The top right rear shock bolt rotted off, so I bought 1 shock. 3 years later as of a week ago , it has now happened to the left rear. I asked the salesman if your suppose to change the shocks in pairs. why did you sell me 1 shock then?

Hi Jr, I can understand your concern. If a car is not very old, replacing only one strut or shock absorber may be enough, since the opposite side is not worn out yet, so that we're offering this Monroe OESpectrum Light Truck Shock Absorber - Part # 37290 individually. However, we're listing the required quantity as two in the fitment box to replace them in pairs for the older vehicle. Meanwhile, I'll forward your feedback to the appropriate department for the review.
Does it matter which way the bottom is mounted onto the lower bolt. One side of the mount has the metal bolt ring protrudes farther out than the other side?
