I always thought you could just pull them, but you can't.
The tool was really easy to use and pulled the socket in seconds. I bought it so I could replace the chrome caps and 12v covers that had broken off over the years of drinks and kids using the cup holders. My Suburban needed a makeover and this helped.

Wrong dimensions or poor tolerances
This lighter socket did "work" in the nominal sense, but it is slightly larger than the OEM part and this caused it to break the locking tabs off the trim ring that holds the trim ring in place. Without those locking tabs, the socket comes out (trim ring still attached) every time a device is unplugged or a phone charging cable is tugged on. Now I need a new trim ring and a new socket.
