Delphi Fuel Pump Module Assembly: With Float Arm, Seal

Replacing a fuel pump is not an easy fix when your gas tank has a lot of fuel in it. The whole tank must be dropped from underneath to access the pump. Unfortunately, the pump usually doesn't give you advance warning when it goes and it doesn't let you run out the gas to make the tank lighter for removal. Once the tank is dropped, pump replacement is easy. It's not the kind of thing that you want to have do do again after less than 10,000 miles of driving. That's the position I am in right now. I bought one of these Delphi pumps at the end of June 2012. Recently, it quit working while I was driving. Luckily I was at a place where I could pull over. After several attempts at restarting, it kicked in and got me home. Since then, it has been working most of the time, but occasionally not when I try to start the vehicle. Using the old "bang the tank with a hammer" trick I learned from one tow truck driver, it usually can get jolted back into service. A critical part like this can get you killed if it fails at the wrong moment. Your engine just dies wherever it happens, leaving you pretty helpless in the process. At this point I'm working on drawing down the gas in my tank before I replace this part with a new one. I'll be looking for one with a better track record and warrantee.

Junk right out of the box!

Sunday, fuel pump had to be ordered because it wasn't in stock. Didn't arrive until Tuesday morning at the store. Already had tank dropped and old fuel pump out and fuel tank cleaned and dried. Installed fuel pump, replaced fuel filter assembly and added 5 gallons of gas to the 20 gallon tank. Pump running but no liquid fuel in fuel rail. Fuel pressure gauge installed and purging into a transparent container to check for fuel flow. Pump is defective! Returned for refund but extremely irritated.

Put this new pump on last week. It fit and works perfectly!
