The Secondary Air Injection system is an emission control device designed to pump fresh air into the engine exhaust system to reduce harmful emissions and convert the emission into harmless water vapor via a chemical reaction. These systems were used heavily in the pre-catalytic converter emission control period but found some application in vehicles with catalytic converter systems. System operation was typically only during a cold engine operating condition but could operate during extreme cold ambient air temperature conditions. System operation was controlled by various types of vacuum control units and temperature switches.
