The Top Dead Center (TDC) sensor also known as the Camshaft Position Sensor provides a signal to the engine control module (ECM)) locating the exact location of the camshaft for spark timing, fuel injection timing and camshaft timing in a variable valve timing (VVT) type engine application. On certain engines the electronic control unit (ECU) will also use the signal to identify specific cylinders for cylinder deactivation where under reduced load conditions cylinders may be cut off reducing a big V-8 type motor to a 6-cylinder or possibly a 4-cylinder operating condition. While most engines today will have multiple camshafts, possibly up to four, the camshaft sensor can be found in-line with the camshaft typically mounted to the cylinder head or valve cover.
