I have a 2004 Escalade ESV (6.0 engine) with approximately 150K miles. The engine still runs smoothly but I'm sure it's time for a tune-up before anything goes wrong. How do I tell if the ignition coils are degraded and need replacement?

Hi Ned, I'm glad to help you! The ignition coils will degrade over time, but many coils are designed to last 100,000 miles or more. This excessive voltage creates a high amount of heat which consequently melts the coil's wire insulation. If the ignition coil is failure it leads to poor fuel economy, A reduced performance in vehicle economy and lower MPG could be a sign of an ignition coil failure or vehicle backfiring or your vehicle will stall. However, without the presence of your vehicle we would not be able to properly diagnose it, nor provide you with a 100% answer. I would suggest that you take your vehicle and get it thoroughly checked by a certified mechanic before buying any parts that may/may not solve the problem.
