Motorcraft in the BOX, P0301, P0302, P0316, Sable - Taurus
PO301, PO302, PO316
I don't know if all of them will be like this, but I opened the box and it had a NEW Motorcraft Coil-Pack in it. So it doesn't get any better than that!! Very happy with the purchase. Worked perfect. I was getting Miss-Fires on Cylinder 1 and 2. There is really no way to tell if it is the coil-pack, plugs or wires. So the best plan is to replace them all. Mercury in its infinite wisdom put the coil pack under the upper intake plenum. So it is a reasonable project to take apart and replace it. Because it is such a production to get to the coil pack, replacing it all is the way to go. It would have been fun to determine which part was bad, but this would have required removing the upper intake plenum 3 times and I was not up to wasting that much time.
The wires have a special boot that seals off the plug cavity. So use Motorcraft Plugs because the plug height affects how well the wires seal. I made the mistake of using Bosch plugs at first and they are too long.
Anyway, after replacing the coil-pack, wires and plugs, the problem is gone. $150 in parts and 4 hours and the problem is solved.
It is worth noting that I believe the old coil-pack was the problem. All these components were only 15 months old. No carbon tracking on plugs or wires. So no real reason they would be failing that I could see. The failing coil-pack was a Bosch. So pretty disappointed I was doing this job a 2nd time when it should have been good for many more years.
Good video for Upper Intake removal.
