The heating-ventilation-air-condition (HVAC) blower motor resistor is designed to control the speed of the interior blower motor. Older applications of this device consisted of 2-3 voltage resistor devices on a board while newer vehicle applications the device contains integrated circuitry and a heat sink to control the speed of the interior blower motor. Reducing voltage with a resistor will natural created large amounts of heat within the resistor block so the resistor will always be mounted in the vehicles ventilation system very near the blower motor itself so that the moving air may cool the resistor assembly. The common failure mode of this device is the loss of one or all speeds of the blower motor. When replacing the unit, the blower motor running amperage should be verified along with the incoming airflow to the heater system. If the incoming air passage should become blocked with leaves or debris, or, on certain vehicle application, should the cabin air cleaner become blocked impeding the movement of air into the cabin, the resistor will overheat and fail.
