The Fuel Level Sensor is a much more critical sensor that just reporting the fuel level in the fuel tank for the purpose of the fuel level gauge reading. The engine operating system and the vehicles emissions control system requires this input to protect the engine should the fuel level be so low as to create a lean operating condition and possibly damage the engine. The other feature, and just as important, is the evaporative emissions system operation. Fuel level must typically be between 15%-85% for the system to purge the fuel vapors.
