The crankshaft position sensor provides a signal to the engine control module (ECM) or ignition control module (ICM) pinpointing the exact location of the crankshaft for spark and fuel injection timing. The electronic control unit (ECU) will also use the signal to identify specific cylinders for misfire detection and cylinder deactivation on some applications. The crankshaft sensor can be found in-line with the crankshaft either mounted to the engine block, the flywheel, or the crankshaft damper pulley.
