The camshaft position sensor (CMP) provides a signal to the engine control module (ECM)) locating the exact location of the camshaft for spark timing, fuel injection timing and camshaft timing in a variable valve timing (VVT) type engine application. On certain engines the electronic control unit (ECU) will also use the signal to identify specific cylinders for cylinder deactivation. While most engines today will have multiple camshafts, possibly up to four, the camshaft sensor can be found in-line with the camshaft typically mounted to the cylinder head or valve cover. The interrupter is mounted to the camshaft or distributor shaft and is the triggering device that creates the sensor signal.
