The ballast resistor is a device used in older ignition systems as a means to reduce the ignition coil primary voltage level during normal driving conditions. While in the engine starting mode the ignition coil primary voltage level should provide normal battery voltage, but once running, if the voltage level is not reduced the ignition coil will overheat and the ignition point will sustain damage and a very short service life.
