I have a 97 Buick Skylark. When I turn the car off, the engine turns off but the switch will not turn all the way off letting me remove the key. Will this switch fix the problem?

I'm happy to help, Sherry! It's possible that the ignition switch could be the culprit in what is not allowing you to turn the key far enough to remove it from the ignition. There are, however, many other possibilities as well. I've found some have a solenoid that sticks and others may have an issue with their shift lever. To properly diagnose the trouble I recommend speaking to a certified mechanic. If you need help finding one, try our 'Need repair help?' link further down this page. I also came across a thread in regards to this issue in GM cars that might help. i have a 96 pontiac sunfire it has a 2.2 litre 4 cylinder. When I turn the key on, the dash lights blink on and off, when I turn key to start position lights go off and nothing happens. I can wiggle the key back and forth and the dash lights will blink. The ignition switch costs about $200 the starter switch about $43.00. how can I tell which part I need.

I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.
Is this the part that goes onthe steeriling colum bihian the ignition key swichts?

The term ignition switch is often used interchangeably to refer to two very different parts: the lock cylinder into which the key is inserted, and the electronic switch that sits just behind the lock cylinder. In some cars, these two parts are combined into one unit, but in other cars they remain separate. It is advisable to check your car's shop manual before attempting to purchase an ignition switch, to ensure that you buy the correct part.
