Nothing keeps it tight against the cylinder. It's meant to "float" on the rod.
How do you install this switch mine is bad on my truck.

For step by step instructions i highly recommend that you go into your nearest Advance Auto Parts store and purchase a repair manual.

First you have to disconnect the electrical connection, then remove the white plastic retaining clip from the switch. Push the switch up the rod slightly then pull the bottom of the switch outward.
To install the new switch you have to place the "wire" end of the switch on the narrow part of the rod and be sure that the spring loaded plunger inside the switch is slightly compressed. The plunger inside the switch MUST go on the narrow section of the rod. Then place the top of the switch against the rod. Push the switch up slightly to compress the plunger. Then push the bottom of the switch against the rod. If you don't install the switch as described or force the switch onto the rod you'll crack the switch. Then install the white plastic retaining clip. Reconnect the clutch switch connector and check to make sure it works. Installation is a little tricky so if you have trouble just about any mechanic can do the job.
