The 3M Body Repair System combines 3M's best resources, 3M and Bondo, demonstrating how they work together to achieve an excellent body repair. The Body Repair System is a four-stage process designed to simplify the body repair process, making repairing anything from rust to dents easier.


Dent Repair

Dents can make the vehicle look bad and reduce its value. Because paint is often damaged when metal is dented, rust can form, eventually ruining the metal.


Mask the area, remove paint and rust.



Clean and dry the repair area.

Clean the damaged area with 3M Adhesive Remover and dry well.

Recommended product:
3M Adhesive Remover, 12 oz.

Mask the area.

Using 3M Automotive Masking Tape, mask around the repair area

Recommended product:
3M Automotive Performance Masking Tape, 36mm x 32mm

Strip paint and featheredge.

Use 24-80 grit to sand to metal in the dent and use 80 grit to sand three to four inches around the dent area.

3M 2-inch Grinding/Sanding/ Finishing System


Pull dents, patch holes and make small repairs.



Repair dented area.

Pull dents to within ¼ inch of original panel surface, if needed.

Fill, repair, sand and feather.



Mix and apply body filler.

Use lightweight body filler to fill damaged area.

Recommended product:

Bondo Body Repair Kit, quart

If you prefer a higher volume, try this recommended product:

Bondo Lightweight Filler, gallon


Sand body filler.

Use 80-180 grit sandpaper to sand filler.

Recommended product:

3M Clean Sand Performance Sandpaper, Assorted


Mix and apply glaze or spot putty.

Apply glaze and spot putty to fill pinholes.

Recommended product:

Bondo Glazing & Spot Putty, 3 oz.


Sand glaze and spot putty.

Use 180-320 grit sandpaper to smooth and feather for an even transition to surrounding paint.

Recommended product:

3M Performance Sandpaper, 3 2/3" x 9", 320 grit


Seal with primer, paint and polish.



Apply and sand primer.

Apply primer of choice, sand with 320-600 grit sandpaper.

Recommended product:

3M Wetordry Sandpaper, 600 grit, 3 2/3" x 9"


Scuff blend area.

Scuff the surrounding paint that will be blended using 800-1000 grit sandpaper.

Recommended product:

3M Performance Soft Sanding Sponge, 800-1000 grit


Apply base coat and clear coat.

Apply base coat and clear coat of choice.


Paint finish.

Use 1000-3000 grit sandpaper to remove light scratches or minor defects in clear coat. Use rubbing compound, then scratch remover to buff out sand scratches for gloss finish.
