The factory power take off unit (PTU) on certain Ford, Lincoln, Mazda and Mercury vehicles often fails when extreme temperatures overheat the internal lubricant. The heat can cause catastrophic damage so severe that it becomes nearly impossible to salvage and rebuild the PTU assembly.
