    Rack & Pinions

Rack and pinion steering utilizes a circular gear against a toothed bar, to give the steering wheel of your {make} control over your front wheels. The rack spans the distance between wheels. It connects to them via tie rods and is generally situated parallel to your vehicle's front suspension. The pinion sits at the end of the steering shaft.

As you turn the wheel, the cogs on the end of the pinion move along the gear teeth of the rack (the toothed bar). It’s a durable design that’s been tried and tested for generations. Hence, rack and pinion.
A fun fact about a typical rack and pinion is that it takes up to four complete turns of the steering wheel to move the rack entirely from one side to the other. A more practical fact about rack and pinion parts is that essential components of the system as a whole are available for purchase separately. So if only one piece of your vehicle's system needs replacing, you can buy a rack, with tie rods included, without the pinion. Other examples of rack and pinion components are boot kits and seal kits. A remanufactured setup is another option, as is a complete, new unit.

If you own an off-road vehicle, and you actually drive it off-road, you'll be interested in more specialized parts like steering dampers, which are also referred to as steering stabilizers. These are critical in absorbing the sorts of pressures that come with large tires and rough terrain and are designed like a huge shock absorber that soaks up lateral forces. Vibrations in your steering system are a tell-tale sign of needing a new steering damper.

If you've been waiting to repair your steering problems or have been putting off the job, you're in for a surprise when you see how much easier and more enjoyable driving with a new rack and pinion can be. Choose from hundreds of these parts at our stores. We feature name brands like Cardone, Maval and Atlantic.
