A serpentine belt or multi-rib belt is routed around and is used to drive other essential parts of a car's engine. These parts include the cooling fan, water pump, power steering pump, AC compressor and alternator.

This automotive belt is an essential part in your vehicle because if it is not in a workable condition, the car will stall. Their life span ranges from 60,000 to 100,000 miles or up to five years. They are manufactured with noise-reduction features due to the nature of their operation and are reinforced to stand up to years of service.

Squeaky or squealing noises coming from under your car hood are one of the indications that your vehicle's serpentine belt needs to be replaced. Other signs that you need a change include: when it is worn out (cracked and frayed) and when it has run for more than the recommended time limit for the particular brand. Any change in the physical condition of the belt will certainly affect its operation.

There are several reasons why a rib belt may operate improperly resulting in a later need for replacement. If any fluids from the engine leak onto the belt it can cause slippage and degrade the belt, depending on the nature of the particular fluid involved. Pulley misalignment will also affect it because it is attached to a system of pulleys. In addition, the serpentine belt tensioner can seize after years of service, throwing the belt off the pulleys. Unnecessary friction can also wear down a serpentine belt.

If you'd like to replace your rib belt on your own, consult your vehicle’s owner manual and study a belt routing diagram for proper installation. You can choose from a wide range of multi-rib belts when you shop with us. The belt length, width and rib quantity vary for different car types, so determine the right size for your car’s engine, and make sure you have the proper tools on hand. A serpentine belt tensioner tool is available for loan at most Advance stores, to make installation much easier. After replacing your vehicle's belt regularly inspect it to ensure it stays in good condition.
