The EGR system is an emission control device designed to recirculate exhaust gas into the engines air intake system and back to the combustion chamber to control nitrogen oxides or NOx. The chemical NOx is created when oxygen and nitrogen are heated above 2,800-degree F. Exhaust gas, or gas that is displaced from the combustion chamber, contains little to no oxygen molecules. The temperature of various systems must be reported to the engine control module (ECM) as well as other operating system controllers in the vehicle. Coolant temperature, cabin temperature, exhaust temperature and ambient temperature are just a few systems reported by a temperature sensor.
