To improve wear and corrosion resistance, valves can be chromium plated or nitrided. These coatings are used to improve the compatibility of the valve stem surface to the valve guide material. If necessary, exhaust valves (and in some cases also intake valves) can be hard-faced. In hard-facing, a more heat and wear resistant material is welded to form the valve seat.
