A Dream Restoration: Share Your Garage Moment Winners
“What do girls want? All this girl wants is to learn everything there is to know about restoring cars," wrote 18-year-old Camille in her submission essay. “That's not too much to ask, is it?" Her father had made her dream come true on her 17th birthday by helping her find a 1957 Chevy to restore. She returned the favor by nominating him for the ultimate garage makeover through the Share Your Garage Moment contest by Advance Auto Parts.
Camille's father was in the auto profession for 19 years — he was an ASE Certified Master Auto Technician, owned a car dealership and taught auto mechanics. “Now he is a realtor, but he still enjoys working on cars as a hobby," said Camille. “I have always had a love for learning from my dad about cars. Anytime he was working in the garage, I wanted to help."
She nominated her father in the Share Your Garage Moment contest because of all the lessons she has learned from him in their garage. Camille's favorite saying of his is “what you focus on expands." It has taught her that if you want something, you have to put in the hard work to get it. In doing so, your knowledge and skillset on the topic will expand.
Their current project is restoring her 1957 Chevy. As a long-time lover of car shows, Camille said, “now that I am restoring my own, it gives a new perspective to looking at the cars." Once the restoration is complete, the father-daughter duo plans on driving Route 66 and Pacific Coast Highway in California. They are also looking forward to keeping it forever for relaxing Sunday drives. “After all that work, no way are we getting rid of it!" explained Camille.
As winners of the contest, they received a professional makeover of their garage building to help them achieve that dream. The makeover included:
- New Epoxy flooring
- Custom gauge steel cabinetry
- Double wall doors and cabinets
- Stainless steel countertops
- Garage lighting
- Mobile steel workbench
- Z-shape creeper
- Car lift
- Inverted tire rack
- In-ceiling speakers
- Pro mesh Wi-Fi system
- $1,000 Advance Auto Parts gift card
With these new upgrades, Camille's restoration project will go smoother than ever. She noted that when all is said and done, “we will have replaced the rust with new metal, painted, reupholstered, rebuilt the engine and tranny, and we will have a brand-new classic car. Best of all, I learned all these lessons from my dad."
