Pressure sensors are used within several operating systems on the vehicle. Subjects in this category measure the pressure of both liquid and air to include air in a positive pressure and negative pressure range. Pressure sensors report out as the result of an electrical device called a strain gauge which produces an analog or digital signal output dependent on the needs of the circuit. Pressures may be very low such as barometric pressure, or extremely high such as in a high-pressure fuel injection system.

The Fuel Level Sensor is a much more critical sensor that just reporting the fuel level in the fuel tank for the purpose of the fuel level gauge reading. The engine operating system and the vehicles emmissions control system requires this input to protect the engine should the fuel level be so low as to create a lean operating condition and possibly damage the engine. The other feature, and just as important, is the evaporative emmissions system operation. Fuel level must typically be between 15%-85% for the system to purge the fuel vapors.
