An automatic transmission is a hydraulic multi-speed device that does not require any input from the vehicle operator other than selecting vehicle direction. Hydraulic pressure is controlled by a series of electronic shift solenoids that are commanded by the transmission control module. Planetary gear sets and hydraulically controlled shift plates and brake bands apply power to the main shaft in the transmission and out to the vehicles drive wheels. The Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid controls the flow of fluid in the various hydraulic circuits.
