From Hot Springs, AR
The two lines that run from the rotary valve to the piston on the rack were installed in the wrong locations at the rotary valve. I missed this prior to installing in my car, as this should've been correct from the vendor. The lines being reversed casued the unit to try and go left and right at the same time when I tried to bleed the system. This resulted in a violent back and forth motion of my steering wheel as I tried to bleed the system. Quite scarry, try holding steering wheel that's moving on it's own under hydraulic power. I tried to reverse the lines which meant pulling the unit back out, as the lines are inaccessable while installed, but they had incorrect bends and could't be switched without major bending. I installed one of the lines off my old rack and re-installed the overhauled unit. Upon bleeding the system and adjusting the front tie rods I found that the boot's were already soaked internally from fluid leaking past the seals in the piston. I returned the unit for refund. To put it lightly I was furious, this is not a quick job as the shift linkage, exhaust, tie rods, strut bar, etc. have to be removed/disconnected in order to remove the unit. I don't hold Advance Auto at fault, but the vendor that supplied this unit has poor quality. The lines being incorrect would've been obvious had this unit been inspected/tested prior to the vendor shipping it.
