Certain vehicle applications are designed to operate with various levels of alcohol content in the fuel system. Most common today are 10-15% alcohol mix with common gasoline while some operating systems allow up to 85% alcohol content. The on-board engine computer uses this sensor to detect the alcohol content and make needed adjustments to the operating system.

The Fuel Level Sensor is a much more critical sensor that just reporting the fuel level in the fuel tank for the purpose of the fuel level gauge reading. The engine operating system and the vehicles emmissions control system requires this input to protect the engine should the fuel level be so low as to create a lean operating condition and possibly damage the engine.
