The Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor provides a signal identifying the location of the accelerator pedal to the engine control module. As the vehicle operator requests various degrees of torque from the engine the signal from the sensor provides the engine computer the necessary information to implement the request. The sensor provides two positive slope signals that have an offset voltage range and increase at different rates, the two signals from the sensor provide the engine computer with two unique signal inputs ensuring safety should one signal fail.

The temperature of various systems must be reported to the engine control module (ECM) as well as other operating system controllers in the vehicle. Coolant temperature, cabin temperature, exhaust temperature and ambient temperature are just a few systems reported by a temperature sensor. The temperature sensor is fed 5 volts by the systems computer, within the sensor housing will be a thermistor, or dropping resistor whose resistance value will change as the temperature surrounding it changes. Changing resistance in the circuit will change the volt signal at the processor indicating the current operating value.

The Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor provides an input to the transmission control module as to the operating temperature of the automatic transmission fluid under the many operating conditions. The transmission control module will provide the transmission hydraulic circuits the optimal fluid pressure for current temperature conditions.
