What Is P0446?
P0446 means the PCM detected a malfunction in the EVAP vent valve circuit. The vent valve (also called the canister vent solenoid) opens and closes the charcoal canister's fresh-air inlet. The vent valve must close during the PCM's EVAP leak test to seal the system. When the PCM commands the vent valve closed and the system does not seal, or when the circuit has an electrical fault, the PCM stores P0446.
P0446 frequently appears alongside P0455 because a vent valve that cannot close prevents the EVAP system from sealing, which the PCM also interprets as a large leak.

Symptoms of P0446
P0446 produces no drivability symptoms in most cases. The vent valve controls the charcoal canister's fresh-air supply, not engine combustion.

What Causes P0446?

How to Diagnose P0446

Locate the vent valve. The vent valve is mounted on or near the charcoal canister under the rear of the vehicle. On Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, it sits on the driver-side frame rail near the rear axle. On Toyota models, it is mounted on the canister behind the rear bumper. Access typically requires raising the vehicle on a lift or jack stands.

Inspect the connector and wiring. Check for corrosion, water intrusion, bent pins, or disconnected connectors. Inspect the harness for chafing, breaks, or rodent damage.

Inspect the vent line for blockages. Locate the vent tube ending near the rear bumper or wheel well. Disconnect the tube and blow through it or use compressed air at low pressure. Check for insect nests, mud, or debris.
