What Causes a P0442 Code? 

  • Worn or damaged gas cap ($5–$15): Most common cause. A cracked, flattened, or hardened O-ring seal allows vapor to escape. Seals deteriorate after 5–7 years of use regardless of mileage. 

  • Cracked or deteriorated EVAP hose ($5–$20): Hairline cracks are nearly impossible to find without a smoke test. Hoses routed near exhaust and turbocharger heat are most vulnerable. 

  • Leaking purge valve ($15–$50): Does not seal completely when closed, allowing vapor to escape. Mounted on or near the intake manifold. 

  • Failing vent valve ($20–$60): Prevents the system from holding pressure during the PCM's leak test. Mounted near the charcoal canister under the rear of the vehicle. 

  • Cracked or saturated charcoal canister ($50–$150): Physical impact or fuel overfilling can create a small leak. Overfilling pushes liquid fuel into the canister and degrades internal seals. 

  • Fuel filler neck corrosion or fuel tank pinhole ($50–$150): Most common on northern-climate vehicles exposed to road salt. 

How to Diagnose P0442 

  1. Inspect the gas cap. Remove the cap and examine the O-ring for cracks, flat spots, hardening, or debris. Reinstall and turn until it clicks. Replace if the seal is damaged or the cap is older than five years. 

  2. Clear the code and drive two to three complete drive cycles. A complete EVAP drive cycle requires a cold start, 10–15 minutes of steady highway driving, and an engine-off rest period. If P0442 does not return, the gas cap was the cause. 

  3. Read all stored codes. P0441 points to the purge valve. P0446 points to the vent valve. Multiple EVAP codes narrow the diagnosis. 

  4. Perform a smoke test. Connect a smoke machine through the purge valve vacuum port, EVAP canister service port, or gas cap opening using an adapter. Watch for smoke escaping from any hose connection, valve body, canister housing, or filler neck joint. Even a pinhole crack produces a visible stream. 

  5. Test the purge valve. Apply vacuum with a hand pump; the closed valve should hold vacuum with no power applied. Apply 12V; it should open and release vacuum. A valve that leaks vacuum when closed is faulty. 

  6. Test the vent valve. Apply 12V; the valve should close and block all airflow. Air passing through while powered means the valve is not sealing. 

How to Fix P0442 

  • Gas cap: Match to your vehicle's year, make, and model. Tighten until it clicks. 

  • EVAP hose: Cut out the damaged section. Secure new EVAP-rated hose with fuel-vapor-rated clamps. Replace the entire hose run if multiple cracks are found. 

  • Purge valve: Unbolt from the intake manifold area. Disconnect the electrical connector and vapor hoses. Install the new valve. 

  • Vent valve: Locate near the charcoal canister under the rear of the vehicle. Disconnect the connector and hoses. Install the replacement. 

  • Charcoal canister: Unbolt from the mounting bracket. Disconnect all hoses and electrical connectors. Install the new assembly. 

  • Fuel filler neck: Some vehicles require lowering the fuel tank for access. A professional shop is recommended if the tank must be dropped.

Can You Drive With a P0442 Code? 

Yes. A small EVAP leak does not affect engine operation, vehicle safety, or drivetrain function. A small EVAP leak does not waste a measurable amount of fuel. The only consequences are a lit check engine light and a failed emissions inspection. Fix P0442 when practical so the check engine light remains available to warn you of other codes. 

P0442 by Make 

  • Chevy / GM Chevy Silverado (2007–2018, 4.8L/5.3L/6.2L V8), GMC Sierra (same years and engines), Chevy Equinox (2010–2017, 2.4L Ecotec), and Chevy Malibu (2013–2016) are the highest-volume P0442 vehicles. On the Silverado and Sierra, the vent valve solenoid near the charcoal canister on the frame rail under the rear of the truck is the most common P0442 cause after the gas cap. Road debris, water, and mud accumulate in that exposed location and accelerate solenoid failure.
