Relays are electrical switches used to convert a small electrical load into a circuit capable of handling a high amperage load. Computers and small switches are not designed to carry the higher amperage requirement of a circuit that may have an electric motor, solenoid, or high amperage lighting fixture. The temperature of various systems must be reported to the engine control module (ECM) as well as other operating system controllers in the vehicle. Coolant temperature, cabin temperature, exhaust temperature and ambient temperature are just a few systems reported by a temperature sensor. The EGR system is an emission control device designed to recirculate exhaust gas into the engines air intake system and back to the combustion chamber to control nitrogen oxides or NOx. The chemical NOx is created when oxygen and nitrogen are heated above 2,800-degree F. Exhaust gas, or gas that is displaced from the combustion chamber, contains little to no oxygen molecules. By recirculating this gas back into the combustion chamber fewer oxygen molecules are available for the combustion event which will therefore create a cooler combustion event. The EGR valve can be actuated by engine vacuum or electronically by the engine control module.
