Relays are electrical switches used to convert a small electrical load into a circuit capable of handling a high amperage load. Computers and small switches are not designed to carry the higher amperage requirement of a circuit that may have an electric motor, solenoid, or high amperage lighting fixture. Within a relay are contacts that are controlled with electromagnetism, when the circuit switch commands the device on or off, magnetism will pull or release the contact arm closing or opening the contacts within the relay that carry the voltage.

Modern vehicles may have 100 or more electrical harness connectors in every operating system of the vehicle. Terminal tension may weaken with time or corrosion may occur within the connector housing making replacement necessary. When replacing any harness-connector assembly approved wire termination methods must be followed to ensure a successful and long-term solution to the original problem is made. The Evaporative Emission System is designed to control fuel vapors in the vehicle fuel storage system to prevent any release of fuel vapors into the atmosphere. In a normally operating system, released vapors from the fuel storage tank will be directed into an on-board charcoal canister via a piping system and control valves. Under the most ideal engine operating condition, the vapors will be pulled into the engine to be burned during the normal combustion process. The leak detection pump uses naturally changing vacuum due to temperature change as well as the pressure change during the normal evaporative purge process to transition a normally open vacuum switch indicating normal operation or system failure.
