Vehicles with manual transmissions have a flywheel. The Flywheel is where the clutch assembly is mounted. It provides a smooth friction surface for the clutch disk. Flywheels also have teeth for the starter. Flywheels can crack, break, or break starter teeth. Once a damaged flywheel is diagnosed, a new replacement is the best route to go. Hays heavy-duty flexplates for high performance and competition engines are constructed of a thicker than stock steel plate, enabling them to withstand the stress of high-stall torque converters and high-RPM engines. While factory stock plates tend to crack around the crankshaft hub when punished under high torque and RPM conditions, the thicker Hays flexplate handles the force. These H.D. flexplates are supplied with a ring gear that is securely welded in place and feature dual bolt patterns for use with either a Powerglide or Turbo-Hydromatic torque converter. All Hays heavy-duty flexplates are zinc-dichromate plated to resist corrosion and are SFI certified under specification 29.1.

Vehicles with automatic transmissions have a flex plate. The flex plates connect the engine and transmission. Most flex plates are made of a thick piece of sheet metal with bolt holes for the torque converter and teeth for the starter. The job of a flex plate is to allow for expansion of the torque converter as engine RPM increases. The constant expansion and contraction of a flex plate over time can result cracks and/or shearing of the flex plate. A damaged flex plate can create serious and expensive damage. Broken flex plates cannot be repaired, they must be replaced. Pioneer Flex Plates are made of high-quality steel and contain the correct bolt hole spacing and ring gear teeth just like the original part to ensure long life and durability.
