The pump can be located next to or on the engine, and uses an internal diaphragm to draw fuel from the tank and push it into the carburetor. A worn internal diaphragm is the most common cause for mechanical pump replacement. The diaphragm is made of cloth-reinforced rubber, and with age may wear out and leak causing poor fuel delivery. Because the diaphragm is integrally sealed inside of it, the entire mechanical fuel pump must be replaced.
