I have seen both plastic idler and tensioner wheels and metal ones on cChrysler minivans. Which is correct though? My 2005 town and country had a metal idler and a plastic tensioner. They were both metal on our previous van, an 03 Grand Caravan Sport. Then there was the 2001 base model Caravan with plastic for both. Confused? Me too. Since all these were made during the best forgotten misery that was the Daimler-Chrysler era it's easy to just blame "superior" German engineering and move on with your life. What I have found is the bearings go out in the metal ones and the wheels melt on the plastic ones. They both fail at about the same time so neither is actually superior and both will have to be replaced.

Not the OE size tensioner, but the other stationary pulley on the 4.0. However, I used it in place of the larger tensioner pulley with no problems. Be advised, if you spray water on the belt and it stops squeaking, you have a misaligned pulley, per the Gates web site. Sure enough, there is a bolt way down under on the engine block that supports the bottom of the power steering bracket; that bracket hole for the bolt is purposefully elongated to make the adjustment. Mine was slightly cocked out as viewed from the front looking down. Also, it's very hard to tell a bad belt, and mine was bad as well. The alignment plus the new belt did the trick. Bought on line and picked up in store.

The OE idler pulley on my MB E500 has a dust cover that snaps on to it. The new pulley wouldn't accept the dust cover. not sure how important it is since the bearings appear to be sealed but time will tell i guess. Otherwise, noisy issue (sounded like a supercharger whine that varied with RPMs) is gone and install was simple. install steps: 1. use 17mm socket on breaker bar and release belt tension enough to pop belt off idler pulley. (socket goes on tensioner under its pulley) 2. pop off dust cover from oe idler pulley with flat tip screw driver 3. use T50 torx to remove mounting bolt from center of idler pulley. 4. install new idler pulley with mounting bolt to correct torque (i guessed what was tight enough) 5. release tension on belt tensioner with breaker bar and 17mm socket like in step 1. Slip belt over idler pulley and make sure its on all other pulleys correctly

I have a 5.7 hemi in a truck and I've bought this exact idler pulley twice in less than 50,000 miles (original lasted ~ 135,000). This second go around the pulley started squeaking in less than two weeks. I'm going to try the better quality one advanced offers now, and if that fails I'll shop online elsewhere for this part. The pulley is probably fine on motors with less tension, or a less pronounced belt angle. I'm guessing the bearings are cooking the grease too fast.

The pulley replaced the old one perfectly. I had to remove the dust shields as was recommended in the instructions on the box, as an option. With the dust shields, the pulley wouldn't turn.
