The variable valve timing (VVT) system allows the engine control module (ECM) to regulate the intake and exhaust valve phase angle providing the most optimal engine volumetric efficiency under all engine operating condition to control tailpipe emissions and engine efficiency. Variable valve timing is an emission control device and although there are various methods of operation, the typical device is regulated by oil control valves, actuator solenoids and camshaft phasers.
