In normal operation, however, this additional damping device has no function and the torsional vibrations of the engine are filtered out by spring dampers. Friction and spring rate – the correct ratio is important. For optimal vibration isolation and soft resonance passage when starting and stopping the engine, the ratio between friction and spring rate must be optimal. The length of the springs is a key factor: The softer a spring, the more efficiently vibrations are isolated. The extra-long springs of the latest generation of dual mass flywheels significantly reduce the spring rate compared to a first generation dual mass flywheel. In routine driving operations, excessive resonance increases are kept almost completely away from the gearbox.

In recent years Self-Adjusting Clutches have become the standard equipment in applications with high engine torque or with increased requirements for wear reserve. INSTALLATION NOTE: This self-adjusting clutch includes a shipping plate which must not be removed prior to installation. If this plate is removed prematurely, the clutch will self-adjust and become unusable. Removing or tampering with this plate prior to installation will VOID THE WARRANTY! As clutch actuation comfort requires a harmonic operating load curve in addition to low actuation forces, the SAC was designed with the capacity to be tuned to each vehicle’s specific characteristic curve. One such feature is the compensation spring, which is able to generate the flatter characteristic curves that are frequently desired.
