What Is P0496?
P0496 means the PCM detected fuel vapor flowing through the EVAP purge valve when the valve should have been closed. Under normal operation, the purge valve stays closed during engine startup, cold engine operation, and idle. The PCM opens the purge valve only during specific warm-engine, steady-driving conditions. P0496 means vapor is flowing when the PCM has not commanded the valve open, which almost always points to a purge valve stuck in the open position.
P0496 is the opposite of P0441. P0441 means the purge valve is not flowing when it should. P0496 means the purge valve is flowing when it should not.
Symptoms of P0496
P0496 produces more noticeable symptoms than most EVAP codes because a stuck-open purge valve allows unmetered fuel vapor into the engine intake, directly affecting the air-fuel mixture during startup and idle.

Hard starting after refueling. A stuck-open purge valve allows fuel vapor from the freshly filled tank to flood the intake manifold while the engine is off. On the next start attempt, the engine cranks three to five seconds or longer before catching. This is the most distinctive P0496 symptom.

What Causes P0496?
P0496 has a narrow cause list compared to other EVAP codes. The purge valve is the cause in the large majority of P0496 cases.
Stuck-Open Purge Valve. The purge valve's internal diaphragm or plunger can fail in the open position, allowing fuel vapor to flow from the charcoal canister to the intake manifold continuously. Heat cycling, age, and contaminant exposure degrade the valve's internal seal over time. A replacement purge valve costs $15 to $50.
Purge Valve with Internal Leak. A torn diaphragm or worn seal can allow a partial vapor flow that is enough to trigger P0496. How to Diagnose P0496
