Comments about Zerostart Engine heater, 600W 120V, 1 5/8" Plug:
Well, like the title says, the caption says ZEROSTART, but I received a KAT'S HEATERS # 11607 for a '00 4.3 out of a GMC Jimmy that I just installed in a '89 S10 Blazer. The package looked like it had been on a shelf for 15 years. The elastic band had disintegrated from age. However, it does work. 600W element ... and it heats up REAL fast out of water. I plugged it in for about 2 seconds just to make sure it was going to work, & the element got hot enough to make me let go in pain - so that's good. Installation was simple with the engine on a stand at the time. Just take a punch & knock the old freeze plug sideways, then yank out with pliers. The block heater is held in place by an arched metal strip that deforms when you tighten the allen bolt down. A rubber o-ring seals it up. I used some Amsoil off-road #2 grease around the o-ring before installation - always a good idea to lube any o-ring. Winter is coming quickly, so we should be putting it to the test in about 2 months or so. After installation I covered the cord in wire loom, & ran electrical tape around it for the entire length. You certainly don't want that cord getting frayed years down the road, & starting a fire while your sleeping! It's in a tough-to-get-to spot with the engine in place, so I'm glad I did it beforehand. Doable with engine in place, but certainly alot more work.
