I guess it's just the design... but if you're considering replacing your rear brake pads on your Explorer, you may as well pick these up shoes while you're at it because the ones on your car have either already fallen apart or are about to fall apart. The glue bonding fails and leaves the friction material "fall off". This could be catastrophically dangerous if it gets jammed between the rotor and the hardware.

I'm now on my third set of parking brake shoes. These Wearever parts did the same thing over ~5 years as the OEM parts did over the car's first 7 years. The good news is that I kept the receipt and Advanced Auto replaced w/o charge under their "Limited Lifetime Warranty".

There's also a good chance your brake hardware is pretty rusted, too... so I'd suggest that if you're doing a rear brake job on your Explorer, to buy both of these and have them ready. It's better to buy them and not need them than to not buy them and find out you needed them with the car jacked up or on the lift. You can always return them, if need be... but make sure you at least check the parking brake's condition if you're swapping brake pads and/or rotor.

The parking brake shoes were a perfect fit on a 2004 Ford Explorer. Everything matched up exactly as the original shoes.

Comments about Wearever Parking Brake Shoes:

Because of Fords design, the hub is in the way, which makes them hard to install. Ford's shop manual and internet sites didn't help either.

An experienced guy told me to put the front shoe and hold down pin on first and then attach the second shoe with the upper spring and pry the 2nd shoe in place. This makes them easy to install.Otherwise there is no room to put the upper spring on with the shoes in place.

Comments about Wearever Parking Brake Shoes:

2004 Ford Explorer needed both parking brakes replaced I was able to replace both sides without removing axles. During the installation a corner of the pad chipped off, was still able to use, but was surprised at how cheaply made the pads are. $ 10.00 core charge was unexpected. Disappointed promotion codes not honored at store only on line. Overall, you get what you paid for "Just OK" BUY AMERICAN IF AT ALL POSSIBLE
