These lamps are the brightest I've used in any car, and I like them a lot. Other reviewers complained about the short life of these bulbs. I wasn't happy that the low beam on one lamp quit after about 18 months. However, the package clearly indicates that the life span of this product is significantly less than that of other, less bright bulbs. I'm a frequent night driver, and for me, the performance is such that I'm willing to change the lamp more often for the sake of a brighter light. Folks who aren't happy with the short life might want to consider a product with better longevity and a bit less performance. In a perfect world, these lamps would last a lot longer, but I'm willing to deal with the tradeoff.

Comments about Sylvania 9003 SilverStar Ultra Halogen, Pack of 2:

The passenger side headlight in my 2000 Honda Odyssey finally died (after 12 years), so I bought the Sylvania lights (seems to be all that is carried in stores). I was going to replace both at once, but haven't had a chance to yank stuff out on the driver's side to get to the other bulb. Honda made it simple to exchange headlights; almost too simple. It was so easy, I thought I was forgetting to do something. I'm not too crazy about Sylvania only offering a 1-year warranty on their bulbs (after all, the stock product has lasted for 12 years - why can't Sylvania make their warranty longer?). Anyway, so far, so good.

What does 150 / 50 indicate and refer?

I see many short bulb life complaints about these bulbs. I'm 3k-4k miles monthly with the majority at night. And, I have my headlights on anytime my vehicle engine is running. I will not be very happy having to replace bulbs often. What realistic life expectancy, with heavy usage can I expect with this product? Thank you.

Is there any need for aligning the bulb after inserting it?

              • A:

Steve is correct! However, one thing to concider is after years of use the alignment may be off. Once you replace the bulbs, you want a nice even dispersal of your light. Old school method: Go to a flat surface, like a side of a cinder block wall a minimum of 15 feet away. Stand behind the vehicle centered and view your pattern. Make sure both are even, and adjust the pattern to cover the lower cinder block row beneath the headlights.
The real deal is more lighting in front slightly to the outside away from traffic. Then the high beams, you will notice that they are spot-on for distance.

I installed two of these on a 2009 Honda Crv. The lights turn on when I start the car even with the light switch in the off position. The only way to turn the lights off is by completely turning the car off. Is this normal?

Woulda like you may have Relays installed to protect from overload. You may have the trigger wire in the relay direct to the power circuit when the ignition switch is activated. A nice feature to have for headlamps on for visibility, however you may want someone to have the trigger wire moved back to the headlight switch.

Hi Carl, glad to assist you! I think there should be some problem with the light switch or wire connections. I would suggest that you take your vehicle and get it thoroughly checked by a certified mechanic before buying any parts that may/may not solve the problem.

Using pair of latex gloves to handle the bulbs is very good idea. However, always use Alcohol and a paper towel or cloth to clean oils from someone else's hands. The packaging can be resealed and returned. Oil or other contaminants will cause a Hotspot on the bulb and fail quickly.

Check the owner's manual for your car, which should have specific instructions. Generally, one pulls the plug that's attached to the existing bulb to remove it. Depending on the vehicle, you may have to remove a retaining spring and/or a rubber or plastic boot. Insert the new bulb, re-connect any springs and/or boots, and re-attach the plug to the prongs on the bulb. Make sure you don't touch the glass on the bulb with your fingers, as the oils from your hands will decrease the life of the product. I usually unplug everything with my bare hands, and then put on a pair of latex gloves to handle and install the new bulbs.

It all depends on your vehicle. My Toyota required the removal of a rubber boot, an electrical connector and undoing a retaining latch. That took about 5 minutes total for both lights.
Advance Auto or any other chain should be able to print out detailed instructions for the asking.
