Because of indicated higher water temperature readings on my guage, I replace the standard thermostat with a Superstat Thermostat by Stant, hoping to get better flow volume at a faster rate. I observed almost immediate results as indicated by a lower guage reading. Installation was simple in my case (1986 el Camino). REMEMBER TO BUY THE TERMOSTAT HOUSING GASKET as it does not come with the thermostat.

I have not installed this part. The original had a pin and an odd shaped bulge to fit the mount into the motor. This one is perfectly round without the pin. The person at the counter said that this is probably the correct part. I am not so sure, and his confidence in the answer was less than encouraging. I bought this because I also purchased the water pump and figured I should probably change them both out at the same time, but I had replaced the thermostat less than a month ago before my pressure recirculating coolant reservoir has developed a leak leading to overheating. I'll watch and replace this one if there is a problem later down the road.

Doesn't come with gasket like others tend to. If your buying this one definitely get the gasket so you don't waste a trip.

Comments about Stant Superstat Premium Thermostat, 195 Degrees Fahrenheit:

This is a suitable replacement for the OEM 195 degrees thermostat. 1995 Ford F-150 4.9L inline six Scrape off all old gasket material, sealer, etc. off of the engine block and the thermostat housing. To save yourself some grief, use black gasket sealer or similar product to hold the water outlet gasket to the front of the engine block and use the sealer around the holes on the gasket. Then place a bead of sealer around the thermostat to hold it in place in the recessed part of the housing. This must be done since the thermostat goes horizontally, crowned end first, into the housing, unlike other vehicles where the thermostat simply drops vertically into the housing. Torque the two thermostat housing bolts into place. Note that the lower right bolt is directly behind the serpentine belt and you will need a short socket to avoid hitting the belt. After you start the engine, you may need to slightly tighten the bolts again if there is any coolant bubbling out of the edge of the housing. Do NOT overtighten or you may crack the housing.

Possibly. Unfortunately we are unable to diagnose what is wrong with your vehicle without being able to be there with your vehicle. We highly recommend taking your vehicle to a reputable shop to have them take a look at it to determine the cause.

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Choosing which temperature of thermostat to go with depends on the climate of where you live. For just average weather, I would stick with whichever thermostat your vehicle originally came with. If the climate is alot colder than most it would be best to use a thermostat with a higher temperature thermostat and vice versa.

Which two thermostats are you talking about ?

Answered on 5/25/2010 by Kevin from AAP
    • A:

Yes this would be a good one, but I'd go with a lower alternative tempature honestly. As far as warranty... like they actually warranty thermostats anyways. It would help if the people that work for AAP actually answer the question asked and not just chime in about a warranty... that WASN'T Asked about
