Yes it has to be plugged in, the charger doesn't have a built in battery.

  • Q:

can I use this charger on a deep cycle battery that I use in my boat

      The following is a guess!
I assume that your battery is AGM
      <http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/absorbent_glass_mat_agm> type.
This charger claims to automatically adjust to AGM or "standard" batteries.
I have only used it for my car and for my lawn tractor. Neither is AGM.
The charger seems to begin each charging cycle in the AGM mode and later
switch out of AGM mode, presumably after detecting that it is connected to
      a standard battery.

    • A:

      Why not.
I use mine for charging my deep cycle starting battery on my boat.
The trolling motor batteries are connected to a built in charger.

  • Q:

Connected to Batt then to wall outlet nothing no lites on unit outlet ok. Does this unit have a fuse and if so what size?
Asked on 11/2/2014 by Ray from Baltimore, Ohio

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

I'm glad to assist, Ray! The unit does not have fuse. Since you didn't mention the specific kind of battery you tried to use, it's hard to say. This is a charger for charging a LEAD-ACID battery only. It is not intended to supply power to a low voltage electrical system other than in a starter-motor application. Do not use this battery charger for charging dry-cell batteries that are commonly used with home appliances. Here is the link for the owner's manual, you can take a look on that for more information:
