Comments about Mobil1 Extended Performance Oil Filter:

I will only use Mobile 1 EP Oil Filter on both my vehicles and I recommend it to everyone that does their own oil changes. Never had a problem with them. I also only use the Mobile 1 EP oil with this oil filter.

What is the flow rate of the filter? Some high performance filters suffer from restricted flow due to a denser filter media. Is this one of them?

What is on the outside of the filter to help me grip and remove the filter when it becomes slick with oil, debris, etc.? Some oil filters now come with a rough material on the outside to help grip the filter.

What wrench works on this filter? On a frontier, it's a big pain to reach through the access hole to loosen the filter by hand. Is there a cup type filter that fits?

    • A:

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant "oil filrer wrench". I was able to find a cup-type one in store, labeled for toyota, that fit this filter and does help especially losening the OEM filter for the first oil change.

I am guessing you do not know the history of what kind of oil that was used? it's good that it does not use oil or leak or I would say no to the change over. I suspect you can see a little in the top of the valve cover and if that is for the most part does not show signs of sludge build up then I would say you will have no issues with the change over and may increase the life of the motor. In the south I would think the 10-30 would be a good choice for you. when you make the change be sure to check for any leaks as synthetic oil tends to be a bit thinner and some times small leaks do show up. I would see no issue of going 7-8k miles between changes. if your oil starts to look real dirty after 3-4K change the filter. I did not mention. be sure to buy the best oil filters you can get local. the mobil 1 filter is real good and others. you will only pay a few dollars more for a good one. best to you

Once you start synthetic - you can't go back. One of the pros - you don't need to change oil than often as before - now you can easily drive 6K miles at least between changes - so at the end the price will be the same. Your concern about that mileage - just don't wash your engine with flush and don't add any additives and I think you can be good to go.

Don't listen to the last post....it is a myth that you cannot switch back and forth between synthetic and conventional oil (which explains why blends are also popular....due to the fact that they mix synthetic and conventional).
