The rear main seal was exactly like the stock that came out. After removal of the mane bearing cap I used a drift punch to drive out the factory upper seal. The new upper seal was lubricated and inserted in place of the old one. The lower seal was applied to the bearing cap using RTV in the corners.

I installed a replacement clutch and while the Transmission was out I replaced the factory rear main seal. The factory seal had 150,000 miles on it and was beginning to leak a little. I also replaced the oil pan gasket in the process.

This is a Bast**d of a part from what others have written and my very recent experience. The 4-liter engines in 2000 Jeeps seem to have undergone some changes mid year for the 2001 production run (that's what the counter guy told me). The rear main seal appears to be one of the victims of the changes. The first half of the year will take the seal with the lips {BS 40612} whereas the second half of the year 2000 production run will take seal without any lips/ears {BS 40183} (again, straight from the counter guy).
All this made perfect sense when I was at the counter today to pick up a seal because the search using my Jeep's VIN said the seal with the lips was the correct one. The door sticker from the factory was more confirmation when I saw that the manufacture date was August 1999. I'm the 2nd owner of this Jeep and the first owner was not a garage/repairing type of guy. He even took it in to the dealer to get windshield wipers replaced, and he made no mention of, or bragged that he had a newer engine put in.
Move forward in time a few hours and imagine how I felt when, upon removing the rear main cap, that there were no lips on my rear main seal anywhere, nor any cavity for them to go into. Stunned and very angry are the only two descriptives I can use that won't get this post deleted.
Fortunately I was forewarned by other posters here and never opened the seal's box, making my exchange for the correct part an hour or so ago proceed smoothly. Unfortunately it won't get transferred to my local store from across the state until tomorrow.
Bottom line: DO NOT TRUST THAT YOU ARE GETTING THE CORRECT PART UNTIL THE OLD ONE IS IN YOUR HAND. Either buy both beforehand and return the one you don't use (especially if time is an issue), or wait till you're holding the old one to order/buy the new one.
Incidentally, that advice works for a great many things, car and non-car related alike.

Comments about Felpro Rear Main Seal Set:

This part will not fit my 2000 Jeep 4.0 even though the description says it is an exact fit. The main seal bearing cap was changed that year. I had to buy a 2001 seal. I had to eat this one because I installed the upper half before noticing the difference on the lower half. The store would not accept the return since it was "used". My dumb for not checking it first. Hope this saves someone else.
