I have replaced motors in 14 Ford Focus automobiles from the 2000 to 2004 range. I have adopted replacement of the fuel filter as standard practice. It is a little bit of a pain in the neck, literally, and I can see why people neglect to replace their fuel filter. When I remove filters from cars with approximately 100,000 miles on them, I am amazed at how brown and dirty the gas is the I pour out of the filter. I also believe that not changing your filter leads to fuel pump failure; as the fuel pump has to work harder to push fuel through a dirty filter. It is a lot easier to change the fuel filter than drop the fuel tank to change the fuel pump. By the way, spray the white squeeze clips liberally with WD-40 and this will help them pop open to release the filter.

The enclosed retainer clips were too large for my 2011 Town Car. This should have been a 15 to 20 min job. It took over an hour and a half since the old one broke and I had to figure out how to make the new one fit.(I sanded it smaller with a power sander.)

Put the flow arrow in the right direction. The clamps that hold the filter on are hard to disengage, had to make a tool out of a small hose clamp to disconnect the clamps.

if your fuel lines are secured with duckbill clips, all you need is a screwdrive to pry off the clips. Remember to depressurize the fuel system first. also, use new clips.
