This starter replaces the original on a 1997 Ford F150 4.6 liter engine 4X4 Off Road Package. The original starter motor was still good but the solenoid was bad, had been failing in the usual manner due to grounding issues, corroded wire, etc. (common Ford problem with the spade type connector that they installed a fix for). Because I had banged the heck out of it and dummied up the solenoid a few times I thought I would treat the truck to a fresh NEW starter.

The design is great and the fit is perfect. When I bench tested it, it was loud but spun like a champ. The solenoid avoids the overtorque problems by giving you a pickup wire pre attached to the board and equipped with a crimp end covered in a heat shrink tubing. Excellent finish and attention to detail overall.

First start made the most unholy racket almost like the gear had spun, but the engine fired right up, so I shut it down and tried again. Many attempts later, I still get a loud noise when starting but I have come to realize that it is the high torque motor itself. Also, the starter gear seems to spin a bit after the truck fires (winds down for a second or two).

So the jury is out and i guess only time will tell. I sort of wish I had just changed the solenoid and had the whisper quiet start I came to expect. The new one woke my daughter up at 5 AM this morning when I started it. Oh well....

A quick internet search would provide the best answer, but from what I recall the starter is between the knooter valve and the summer breeze tank.

Just a FYI on any warranty item. After two years Advance DOES NOT keep record of the purchase. You must have the receipt for an exchange.

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Hi Omarrodz, glad to assist you! This part carries a limited lifetime replacement warranty. The lifetime warranty part can be refunded for cash/credit within the 90 time frame. After that time expires, it can only be exchanged for a new item. So the warranty is valid the life of the part as long as the customer owns the vehicle.
