This starter was installed into a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L 6cyl. The orientation of the starter puts it right underneath the oil filter, and on many of these 6 cyl Jeeps, there is an oil leak that drips right onto the starter, killing it. The body, soleniod, and wire,on the remanufactured starter, are all sealed with silicone. This helps to keep out oil and water and any moisture that might get into the starter and destroy it. The original starter didn't have any sealer on the body and oil seeped in and caused it to seize up one very cold morning. This starter also came with a limited lifetime warranty, so if it dies ANY TIME within the life of the vehicle it will be replaced FREE.

Comments about CARQUEST Starter - Remanufactured:

I own two jeep grand cherokees and will do simple repairs if I have a good idea of what is needed. My 1995 jeep was not starting until I tried several times. Just would make one click sound and then nothing. The battery and alternator are new. I guessed the starter was bad. After reading my repair guide, looked like an easy fix. The replacement part from Advance fit perfect. The final cost was less than (after core refund) trying to diagnose the problem. I am so pleased that I may buy a spare starter for my other jeep.

I had a starter dragging on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L 6Cyl. I ordered online and picked up with no problems. This starter looked exactly like the factory original starter I removed. My Jeep starts up very well now and encountered no issues.

              What's the difference between 1998 and 1999

While not positive the starters may work with the 4.0 engines, 1999 was the
first re-design of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The ZJ becoming the WJ. From my
understanding the V8 option went from 5.2 to a 4.7, as well as other
body/interior changes. Check your part number on the existing starter to
verify compatibility. Your local Advance Auto Parts should be able to tell
you the correct starter for your vehicle.

With reference to your inquiry on the Autocraft Battery Acid - part# CYCLE ACID, not all 12 volt batteries actually use acid. Lead/acid storage batteries do, however, and in those the acid is generally 4-5 molar sulfuric acid. "How much" acid depends on the volume of the battery. Some batteries are physically larger than others but for a rough figure you can assume that somewhere around 30% of the liquid by mass is sulfuric acid. For any further assistance, please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto Parts store and one of our Parts Pros will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

It depends upon the skill level of the person performing the operation. For installation, I would recommend purchasing a repair manual.

It sounds as though you either have the battery cable hooked up to the wrong terminal on the starter or the starter relay is stuck closed.
